What is Nuun ?

Nuun comes in a tough tube that is water resistant and perfect for carrying in your hand, bike jersey, pack…wherever. 1 tube = 6 litres (~1.5 gallons) – enough for a good ride or a week of skate skiing. and if you travel, forget trying to find your normal drink or suffering the indignity of bags of powder bursting in your luggage, a couple of tubes in your bags will get there in one piece and get you through the week of training in Colorado. I used Nuun at The Transrockies run in 2008 , and it help me recover each day.

The Whistler Nordics Twoonie race season is over, the Coast Cups are done, but there is still a final chance to race on skinny skis and fir the Biathlon rifle before the 2010 games. The third and final Salomon Biathlon event takes place this Sunday.

When :March 29

Where: Whistler Olympic Park.

Cost :$10

Registration : 1:15pm at the Biathlon Stadium, race starts @2pm

There will be two courses, one for recreational skiers and a longer one for elite racers, with all participants getting a chance to fire actual biathlon rifles supplied by Whistler Olympic Park, West Coast Nordics, and other biathlon organizations. The event is open to all ages and abilities, classic skiers and skate skiers, and rentals are available at Whistler Olympic Park for people who don't own equipment.
We suggest getting there early to ensure the race starts on time.

With the growing popularity of each Salomon Biathlon Event, we ask people to be patient during registration for this event. Please show up at 1:15pm for registration!

For this event there will be two self selected divisions. One "elite" and one "recreational". Elite simply means we will make you ski a longer course distance. Elite skiers will ski the 3.3 km loop three, recreational skiers will ski the 2km loop three times each . Each participant will ski the aforesaid distance shooting in between each lap and full penalty laps (it goes like this: start, ski, shoot, penalty lap, ski, shoot, penalty lap, finish, eat, drink).

Cost: $10
Whistler Olympic Park Event Waiver: Yes you must fill it out COMPLETELY and sign it

On January 11 Whistler Olympic park and the West Coast Nordics smashed all participation estimates by hosting 144 skiers at the Salomon Biathlon Series- a series of biathlon races aimed at introducing biathlon to the masses. 36 teams of 4 people competed in the 2 km biathlon race.

The participants skied one 1.5km loop and then a 900m loop stopping at the range after each loop to shoot five shoots at five targets. For every missed shot, they skied a 120m penalty loop as atonement for their imprecise marksmanship. A three lap maximum was installed on the penalty loop so if any skier missed four or all five targets in a single bout then three loops was considered enough punishment at this friendly competition.Participants ranged from regular Whistler and Squamish endurance athletes to beginner skiers just happened to be in the biathlon stadium and decided at the last minute to try a biathlon experience. Such stars as Trevor Linden competed.If you missed this great event your next chance will Feb 8.

The Salomon Biathlon Series will follow right after the North American Cup which tales place on Feb 7 and 8. Come early, help at the Nor Am and be sure to get a spot in the start of the twoonie. Thanks to all the sponsors.

This is where it all starts. Your first couple of skis are very important. Just as important as your wax.

The Whistler Nordics are having a fund raiser for the club where for a minimum of $15 donation you can get your skis waxed by top wax technicians to get your skis running smoothly and efficiently. Bring your skis to the Nordic Shop on December 8th at 6:30pm and pick them up the following day. Use this opportunity to learn and ask questions regarding waxing.

Remember, you are only as fast as your skis! The more efficient they glide, the less you have to work.

Biathlon Race Etiquette
The Monthly race is a great community event, enjoyed by a wide range of ability in skiers. Whether you are a competitive racer or just want to have fun with your friends. But what everyone shares is a sense of respect.

Respect for trails,
Respect for other racers, and
Respect for the sponsors who put these events on each Month.
Respect for the Biathlon rifles.

We have put together some etiquette guidelines to help everyone enjoy their Biathlon experience.

Crowding: Sometimes the range becomes congested with skiers waiting for a rifle. This is part of the experience. Be patient, wait your turn and eventually you will get a rifle.

Passing: If you are skiing along with people behind you, ask them if they want pass. Check regularly to see if there is anyone on your tail. If you notice someone behind you all of a sudden, they have already beaten you. Let them pass you when it is safe to do so. Likewise, if you would like to pass the person in front of you, ask them politely if you can pass them. Make sure it is a safe place to pass, stay on the trail and thank them for letting you by It’s going to happen and you can’t take this too seriously. Smile and have fun.

Our Basic Rules

A biathlon competition consists of a race in which contestants ski around a cross-country track, and where the total distance is broken up by either one, two or four shooting rounds, All we be in prone position. Depending on the shooting performance, extra distance will be added to the contestant's total running distance. As in most races, the contestant with the shortest total time wins.

For each shooting round, the biathlete must hit five targets; each missed target must be "atoned for" in one way and only way.

CALGARY—Five of Canada's top female biathletes shed their lycra race suits to officially launch a nude calendar on Wednesday which they created to celebrate healthy, active women's bodies, and also to generate money to fuel their quest for the international podium.

Zina Kocher, of Red Deer, Alta.; Sandra Keith, of Calgary; Rosanna Crawford, of Canmore, Alta.; Megan Imrie, of Falcon Lake, Man.; and Megan Tandy, of Prince, George, B.C., developed the plan to pose nude together in Bold Beautiful Biathlon, which is on sale now for $25 at www.boldbeautifulbiathlon.com on the Internet.

With a goal of targeting financial support from corporate Canada for their Olympic journey, the five Canadian women turned up the heat on a frigid Calgary morning when they roller skied through the downtown core during noon hour with nothing more than shorts, race bibs for tops, and their traditional biathlon rifles locked on their backs.

"We are extremely appreciative of the generous financial support given to our program by Sport Canada, and by Own the Podium to the athletes on our team that are projected to achieve excellence," said Zina Kocher, a targeted athlete herself and the leader of the Canadian Biathlon Team, who in 2006 became the first Canadian to win a World Cup medal since Myriam Bedard did more than a decade ago. "But our sport remains significantly under-funded compared to our competitors, and one of the few winter sports in this country without a title sponsor or personal sponsors."

Funding for an athlete's annual budget comes from a variety of avenues. Personal sponsorships are a core component to covering the many annual expenses high-performance athletes face for both training and competition. Despite being one of the lone fully-funded athletes in the national biathlon program, Kocher and long-time World Cup and Olympic teammate Sandra Keith, took the lead in rallying their World Cup comrades to aggressively seek additional funding opportunities.

"We believe there is a tremendous opportunity for someone in corporate Canada to not only invest in this team and our drive to the Olympic podium, but also to invest in building a new image for young Canadian girls to look up to," said Keith, who enjoyed a breakthrough season on the World Cup last year which included a career-best 11th-place result. "Contrary to a lot of images young girls are seeing on television and in magazines about the ideal woman's body, it is a healthy athletic body that we should all be looking to maintain. You don't need to be a high-performance athlete to be fit, and we are encouraging all women to be proud of their bodies."

The photos of Keith, Kocher and their teammates were taken by Rachel Boekel and Adrian Marcoux in Canmore, Alta. Each athlete will be featured on two pages of the calendar, along with four group photos.

The Canadian biathletes were inspired to take on the project when thinking back to the success two of their Olympic heroes in cross-country skiing, Sara Renner and Beckie Scott, had in raising funds after producing a similar calendar in 2001. Renner and Scott, along with three other teammates, tastefully took their clothes off to also raise the profile of their sport while showing the world cross-country skiers were fit and healthy people.

"An athlete's livelihood depends on their bodies and I believe athletes should be proud of their bodies. This calendar celebrates strong, athletic women," said Sara Renner, who will compete in her fourth and final Olympic Winter Games in 2010. "As the mother of a daughter, I would be proud to see pictures of these role models on my child's wall as opposed to a synthetically enhanced Hollywood star."

Sales of the calendar took off for Canada's cross-country ski women, which helped finance their preparations for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City where Beckie Scott became the first North American woman to win an Olympic medal when she won gold in the pursuit race. Scott and Renner later joined forces to win a silver medal in the team relay at the 2006 Olympics.

A healthy, female body is a beautiful thing and if these girls choose to celebrate it with a calendar, then all the power to them," said Scott, who also became a mother after retiring in 2006 with 17 World Cup and two Olympic medals. "The unique thing was we created this calendar right on the cusp of our team making huge strides in the sport internationally, and I hope this marks the same trend for the biathlon women. I wish them the very best and give them my full support."

Canada's biathletes will be hoping history repeats itself as well – both with sales of the calendar and on the biathlon course. The calendar will begin selling across the country immediately, while the team will hit the start line for their first World cup race of the season one month later in Sweden.

2012 & 2013 World Championships host city's awarded !

By decision of the 8th IBU Congress, the Biathlon World Championships 2012 will take place at Ruhpolding. In 2013 Nové Město na Moravě will be hosts of the competitions.
German candidate Ruhpolding beat their only competitior Lahti (Finnland) while Czech candiate Nové Město na Moravě prevailed in the bidding contest over Oslo/Holmenkollen (Norway) and Kontiolahti (Finnland).
Only hours before the decision process, Nové Město had withdrawn its second bid for 2012 from the double candidacy.
St. Petersburg will host the 9th IBU Congress in 2010. The Russian Metropolis prevailed over Lahti which had to face its second defeat today.
